Boîte Noire
This week’s song is French house, in the spirit of early Daft Punk and Justice. I made it the way they did: start from a record. Google Lyria generated an original late-70s Philly disco track (I wanted to avoid copyrighted material), and then we chopped eight loops out of it, on the beat, and alternated them through the song. The record runs at 118 BPM and the song at 122, so the box time-stretches every loop to the song’s tempo, on the beat, without changing its pitch. Change the tempo and the loops follow. The drums and the bass are played entirely on the box.
The filter sweeps come from a new plugin, FILTRE: a 24 dB resonant filter written in Lua that runs on the Daisy.
The compressor comes from another plugin, FRENCH TOUCH. It models the Alesis 3630, the cheap compressor Daft Punk said was “the main one we used” on Homework and Discovery.
It is crazy easy to create a plugin! The idea is that anyone can ask AI to re-create any plugin. And so far it works amazingly well!
